Tasting Notes

Aroma

Boysenberry, blackberry and cherry fruits, laced with cocoa, clove and pepper spice.

Palate

Intense red and black cherry fruits dominate the palate, heightened by the growing presence of blue florals and pepper spice. Chewy tannins, subtle oak and fine acidity achieve great length and balance.

Vinification

Hand picked and fermented in 2tn open fermenters. 100% destemmed. Initial pump over for the first few days and then plunged twice daily. Wild ferment, on skins for roughly two weeks.

Vintage Notes

2021 was a cool, low cropping year, resulting in small bunches with loads of intensity. The Shiraz was harvested in April post Easter and fermented in open static fermenters, plunged by hand twice a day for lovely colour and tannin extraction. Some whole bunch provides lifted aromatics and spice.

Winemakers Comments

Our vineyard was planted on the steep Eastern slopes of the Grampians in 1969. It represented part of the second coming of the Victorian wine industry which had seen very little new plantings since the turn of the century. The region had always had a pedigree for great wines with the first vineyards in Grampians being planted at Bests & Seppelt’s, in the early 1860’s. The vineyard was owned by Trevor Mast and Mount Langi Ghiran, before the Drummond Family (Stonier Winery) purchased it in 2013.

The wine comes from a vineyard 20km away from home and is gloriously rich and velvety while not losing the Grampians stamp. Black cherry and plum fruits fill the mouth, making this an each-way special. Points: 95/100

Black plum, dark chocolate, gum leaf and mint. It’s a rich and dark wine, all liquorice and dark chocolate, with a fair bit of spice, almost like a (proper) panforte in a way, with cocoa tannin and a finish of good length. Rich. Flavoursome. Points: 92/100
