Winemakers Comments

Our vineyard was planted on the steep Eastern slopes of the Grampians in 1969. It represented part of the second coming of the Victorian wine industry which had seen very little new plantings since the turn of the century. The region had always had a pedigree for great wines with the first vineyards in Grampians being planted at Bests & Seppelt’s, in the early 1860’s. The vineyard was owned by Trevor Mast and Mount Langi Ghiran, before the Drummond Family (Stonier Winery) purchased it in 2013.

Region Notes

Planted in 1969 to Shiraz, Cabernet & Riesling totalling 23 acres under vine. A cold site being east facing and at high elevation 260 – 300M Mean January Temperature (MJT) 20.6 degrees C. The soil is red clay loam with granitic sands and buckshot, dating back 380 million years ago to the Devonian period. As the soils are old and weathered the vines are naturally low yielding.

Plum, cherry, a dusting of paprika and pepper, a dash of vanilla, cedar and tobacco. It’s medium-bodied, even flow of cherry and blackcurrant flavour, a little mint and leafiness, a light grainy chew and a sort of ground pepper feel to tannin, with balanced acidity and cool-ish finish of good length. Very nice. No mistaking it for Victorian Cabernet, and a charming wine all up. Good now, though likely better with a few more years on it. A toss up between 93+ or 94 kind of thing. Points: 94/100

Grampians cabernet is hardly flavour of the month, but Fallen Giants is doing its best to change that. This is another excellent release. There's as much pepper as leaf, as much plum as blackcurrant, but there's a sinewy aspect to the tannin that is very cabernet and, as this variety often does, it uses mint/eucalypt characters to very good effect; adding lift and life to the darkness beneath. Add a briar note to the aftertaste and you're in excellent territory. Points: 95/100
