Intense red and black cherry fruits dominate the palate, heightened by the growing presence of blue florals and pepper spice. Chewy tannins, subtle oak and fine acidity achieve amazing length and balance.

Winemakers Comments

Our vineyard was planted on the steep Eastern slopes of the Grampians in 1969. It represented part of the second coming of the Victorian wine industry which had seen very little new plantings since the turn of the century. The region had always had a pedigree for great wines with the first vineyards in Grampians being planted at Bests & Seppelt’s, in the early 1860’s. The vineyard was owned by Trevor Mast and Mount Langi Ghiran, before the Drummond Family (Stonier Winery) purchased it in 2013.

Region Notes

Planted in 1969 to Shiraz, Cabernet & Riesling totalling 23 acres under vine. A cold site being east facing and at high elevation 260 – 300M Mean January Temperature (MJT) 20.6 degrees C. The soil is red clay loam with granitic sands and buckshot, dating back 380 million years ago to the Devonian period. As the soils are old and weathered the vines are naturally low yielding.

Black cherry, blackberry, liquorice, lots of crushed spice with a little minty/gum leaf perfume, wheatgerm too. It’s medium-bodied, a sweet uptake of spicy blue and red fruit, and I’m thinking Arnott’s spicy fruit roll biscuits here, a bit of a gummy feel too, with grainy tannin, frisky and jubey acidity, and a minty finish of excellent length. Very good. Jelly and good times. It’s very good wine. Has energy and life. Points: 94/100

Sweet fruit runs through the wine's generous core, with fistfuls of spice around the edges. This is an easy wine to love. Black cherry and plum, woodsy spice, orange jelly and a mix of black pepper and cloves. It's not a big wine but it's itching to impress, in the most pleasing of ways. Points: 95/100
