Tasting Notes

Maturation

8 months.

Palate

Highly perfumed and textured Pinot Noir.

Vinification

Hand picked, straight into a refrigerated container parked on the vineyard. The fruit is then immediately driven to Devonport and sailed across Bass Strait so we receive it into the winery the following morning. Fruit was destemmed and cold soaked for three four days in open oak vats and open stainless steel fermenters. The MV6 (from the top of the hill) was fermented as whole bunches in an oak fermenter. Both parcels were matured in French oak 25% new, 75% older for eight months in 225L barriques D and J, Vicard and Taransaud. Racked to blend, no fining, no filtration.

Cellaring Potential

Two-ten years.

Vintage Notes

A very cool start to the season was punctuated by a few solid rain events in December that led to healthy dark green canopies. The final stage of the growing season was cooler than average which led to delayed ripening, and softer colours. Acidity across both the clones in the top Pinot blocks was naturally high. Fruit was hand sorted in both vineyard and winery. The 2021 vintage in southern Tasmania has produced highly perfumed and textured Pinot Noir.

Winemakers Comments

In our obsession with Single Vineyard Pinot Noirs from great Pinot growing areas around the world, we have gone as far south (and as cold) as you can go in this country. Despite the cool temperatures, the sunlight hours are long and intense and we are intrigued by the depth of palate and colour that is possible from this landscape. While it is made with the Giant Steps gentle winemaking approach, the result is clearly a world apart in terroir.

An 85/11/4% varietal split and made into an early-drinking style that’s taking the Valley by storm. Giant Steps make an LDR – light dry red – but this has an altogether different take with its flavour profile. Super-bright and juicy fruit, a mix of dark plums and red berries, sarsaparilla with a light dusting of spice. The palate is actually quite refined, with svelte tannins and refreshing acidity. Given the style brief, this is pitch perfect. It’s hard to put it down. So I didn’t. Points: 95/100

Loads of spices, including pepper and nutmeg on the nose. Medium-bodied, with soft tannins and a lot of what appears to be whole-bunch character, giving among other things a note of Campari. Stacks of fruit here. Very good balance including ample soft tannins. A smart wine, bright, fresh and well-made. Points: 93/100

Seductively silken-textured red with cassis, black-fleshed plum, pepper and anise. Deliciously accessible now but the wine should develop well at least in the medium-term. Points: 94/100

This red blend has bright and spicy red and dark-berry aromas with a floral edge, as well as subtle, earthy and stony nuances. The palate is bright, light and focused on red-berry flavors. Drink now. Points: 91/100

Made from a blend of grape varieties more likely to be found in the south of France than in the Yarra Valley, this moreish young red does a lovely job of coupling easy drinkability with plenty of aromatic and flavour interest. Bright and purplish in colour, the nose harmoniously couples cherry-like fruit with sweet and savoury spice and herb aromas, against a warm earthy background. It’s medium-bodied, soft, ripe and spicy in flavour, suggesting a significant whole berry component, and it flows smoothly through the palate, fresh with mouth-watering acidity and balanced by soft, friendly tannins. Lush, slurpy red, all dark berries, cola, pepper and sage herbal character. Good perfume, good flavours, good texture which is sandy and swishes with sexy, silty tannins. Long too. The wine feels medium weight, come hither and easy appeal, but dials in some complexity alongside its drinkability. It’s charming from the get go. Very polished and prim in a way too. A very nice expression, all up, and ready to roll. Points: 92/100
