Tasting Notes

Aroma

A seductive, comforting nose of plush dark red fruits sits in harmony with black earth and a fresh waft of field herbs and eucalypt.

Maturation

On fine lees, 20% new French oak all 228L

Palate

A splash of Cabernet helps its appeal. Yep, sure seems like Australia to me – and the rich palate is generous without being bulky, underpinned by solid structure, a firm seam of fine-grained tannins and the most gentle oak frame to bind it all through a long, balanced ride.

Vinification

2t open top, indigenous yeast, two week ferment, hand-plunging & pump-pover twice daily.

Winemakers Comments

I am privileged to work with small parcels of fruit from old, dry-grown, hand-pruned and picked vineyards across the Barossa. We were utterly spoilt for choice in 2022 with many blocks across the Barossa & Eden Valley going into ‘Old Vine’ Shiraz. At Nuriootpa (Planted 1890) we used the De Ruiter vineyard as the base, then Flaxman Valley’s Wilton Hill Block 1 (Planted 1910) and finally a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon from Moculta (Planted 1980) on deep red clay. We do not push the ripeness here and aim for a gentler extraction. Combine this with 20% new barriques (the rest ex-white barriques) for 18 months and the wonderful richness and sweetness of ‘Old Vine’ fruit remains in focus. The 2022 has an extra layer of richness and texture – and will surely blossom when approached by richer protein dishes. Bottled unfined under Stelvin capsule.

A 50/50 blend of Eden Valley and Barossa Valley shiraz with a 5% splash of cabernet sauvignon (Nuriootpa, Flaxman Valley and Moculta) that shows earth, dark plum, blackberry and black cherry tones, along with hints of licorice, mixed spice, meadow herbs, peppercorn, tapenade and crushed rock. There's some grippy, fine-grained tannin beneath all the dark fruit, a bright, briny line of acidity and a sense of earthiness as the wine slowly trails off. Points: 92/100
