The critical decision by winemaker Tom Carson was to pick early from the low-yielding, warm north-west facing block. The result is a long, medium-bodied wine that has hallmark Heathcote richness of supple dark fruits married with the vibrant freshness ex the 13% alcohol. Points: 97/100
Hand picked, made in 2 batches. The 1st batch (40% of blend) was fermented in stainless-steel open fermenters with 100% whole bunches, the 2nd (60%) fermented in French oak cuves with 20% whole bunches. Pressed and transferred into 500L French oak puncheons for mlf. Block F brings potency and a deeper concentration of flavour than the standard release. Heathcote’s beauty is amplified; its florals, luscious plums and dark berries so fragrant. Well structured with taut tannins, judicious oak on show and plenty of time to kill. This will age very well. Jeni Port Points: 95/100
The flavour and the tannin here are both convincing but I’m not sure that the acidity is; every time I looked at this wine the acidity seemed to dangle. Everything else is in high working order. Plum, anise and dried herb flavours are swept up in swish, cedarwood oak, and the wine’s charcuterie-like notes are woven intricately and well. The same too can be said of the tannin; it feels so fine-grained that if you dipped a needle in I suspect that it would play music. If the acidity settles and integrates then we’ll have a beautiful wine on our hands. Points: 91/100
