Tasting Notes

Aroma

Floral, highly perfumed, berries and dried leafy spice.

Maturation

Maturation for 6 months then occurred in large format older oak casks to enhance the purity of the fruit and regional characteristics of the Woodside vineyard.

Appearance

Bright purple hues.

Palate

Rustic and shaped palate with juicy red fruits and crunchy cranberry acidity. Fine acid line and glossy tannins with a persistent, yet elegant finish.

Vinification

Fruit for this wine was hand-picked to keep whole bunches intact at harvest, and then destemmed without crushing to allow for whole berry fermentation in 2T opens. As soon as soon as ferment was complete and zero baum recorded, the fruit was pressed. This immediate action was designed to maintain the primary brightness of the wine and the highly desirable cab-mac and musky notes. Whilst separating berries from stems early in the winemaking process, minimised the risk of green / stalky notes that can be associated with whole-bunch processing.

Winemakers Comments

Gamay originates from France in the region of Beaujolais but has recently found a welcoming home in the Adelaide Hills. Gamay is light in body with low tannins and vibrant acidity, making it a marvel to pair with a variety of food.

Is Gamay the new Grenache? It is certainly having a moment with some mighty impressive Gamays being released. This is one of them. Eye catching in youthful, bright red-purple hues. Follows up with a heady, summery fragrance in cherry, plum and cranberry with a sizeable dose of spice and aniseed. This is no caricature of Beaujolais. It has its own individual style: well- structured and generous across the middle palate with juicy tannins playing a support role. Plummy, approachable red fruits on the palate with a splash of sour cranberry and dried herbs offer immediate drinking pleasure, but there’s also potential for short-term ageing. Based on this little charmer, I look forward to seeing more Adelaide Hills Gamay coming through. Points: 92/100

I'm a bit of a gamay-head. I'll come out with that confession straight away. It gladdens my heart to see more examples of the variety popping up each year. Light ruby in hue with a pretty aromatic profile. It's flecked with wildflowers and citrus blossom, and the fruit is all airy and detailed cranberry and red fruits with mountain herbs and a spicy edge. Super-sapid acidity provides great velocity and lipsmacking intensity. Give it a chill if you like? Points: 92/100
