Tasting Notes

Aroma

Opulent yet lithe, The Peakes aroma is tantalising, seductive in its youthful confidence while daring you to wait years.

Maturation

Three rack-and-returns were conducted over eighteen months as the wine seasoned in a mixture of fine-grained Bordeaux and Burgundy-coopered barrels.

Palate

Lashings of all the blackest pulpy berries, bright, fine tannins and lively natural acidity ensure this is wine of long-term promise.

Vinification

The grapes were hand-harvested from vines planted in 1971 set in high country (220-230 metres). With the varieties fermented separately, the clusters were destemmed and the berries were sorted straight into open fermenters. The cold soak lasted four days; the skins on the Shiraz were plunged three times daily and the Cabernet was pumped over daily. Both were left on skins for a minimum eighteen days. After basket pressing, the light pressings of the Cabernet were included in the free run while the heavier pressings were kept separate.

Gorgeous nose of hazelnuts, black cherries, blackberries, mocha and bay leaves. Hints of spearmint. Seamlessly integrated, with a concentrated and delicious core of dark fruit, herbs and seductive spice. Muscular, fleshy tannins. Showing beautiful cabernet character with a long life ahead. 57% cabernet sauvignon and 43% shiraz. Drink or hold. Screw cap. Points: 96/100

57/43% from blocks planted in 1971 (67%) and 2001 (33%), separately fermented and blended shortly prior to bottling, 151 dozen made. The silky Rolls Royce power and intensity tells of painstaking fruit and barrel selection, the end result a flawless wine of rare quality and complexity in a mirror-calm sea of black fruits. Points: 98/100

Very deep, dark red colour with a purple tint; the bouquet dense and complex, with savoury rather than fruity personality, and neither variety showing out obviously. Very full-bodied, concentrated and dense, with fabulous ripe, powdery, fin-grained tannins in abundance. Very mouthfilling with a long, long carry. A wine of wonderful depth, power and texture.
