Tasting Notes

Aroma

Evoking notes of blackberry, ripe fig, and Arabic coffee.

Maturation

Three rack-and-returns were conducted over fifteen months as the wine seasoned in a mixture of fine-grained Bordeaux and Burgundy-coopered barrels.

Palate

It retains an unlikely softness given its serious long-term potential; its silky elegance is deceptive.

Vinification

The grapes were hand-harvested from vines planted in 1971 set in high country (220-230 metres). With the varieties fermented separately, the clusters were destemmed and the berries were sorted straight into open fermenters. The cold soak lasted four days; the skins on the Shiraz were plunged three times daily and the Cabernet was pumped over daily. Both were left on skins for a minimum eighteen days. After basket pressing, the light pressings of the Cabernet were included in the free run while the heavier pressings were kept separate.

Precise, firm and focused, featuring a rich milk chocolate dimension that mingles with concentrated raspberry puree and blueberry flavors, showing dashes of dried rosemary and black tea. The finish is spectacular, revealing accents of sandalwood and spice. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Drink now through 2034. Points: 93/100

A robust and concentrated aroma of ripe mulberries, blackberries, dark chocolate and tar. A generous, intense, and opulent palate with plentiful fine tannin and balanced acidity. It is a bold, full-bodied wine that has been very well-made, and it will cellar long into the future. Points: 95/100

Ultra tight, and cloaked in layer upon layer of super expensive oak... Seamless underneath, a wine of texture and surprising moderation with fine tannins just adding to a mouthful of coiffed, enveloping richness. Magnificent texture that – unsurprisingly – reminds me of top Napa reds. Regal, deep and impressively luscious red built for the very long term. Best drinking: You could open it now but just a few years will make it even better. Then twenty years plus. 18.7/20 Points: 95/100

Deep, dark red/purple colour. The bouquet is fresh and bright and at this stage shows the spice of the shiraz component, but the more you sniff, the more the cabernet blackberry and blueberry shines through. The fruit is perfectly ripe and the wine is superbly balanced; where it differs from the Trueman cabernet and the Brooks Road shiraz is its structure. It has a firmer backbone, which will ensure it ages well and long. Black, red and blue berry aromas and flavours, cedar and spice, the shiraz spice receding the longer the wine is aerated. A wonderful glass of red wine. Points: 98/100

The sum is greater than the parts here. Stunning interaction of the two grapes. The shiraz fills and lightens the cabernet just perfectly. Abundant red and dark berries, plums and chocolate. Super fine tannins, too. This is blended to perfection. A brilliant wine. Drink or hold. Points: 96/100

It would want to be given the asking price but the quality here is quite superb. It’s an accountant’s dream: strong in volume, balanced in nature, its forward estimates bright. Cloves, tar, blackcurrant/redcurrant and choc-mint, a swoosh of smoky oak. It displays both presence and decorum. You can bank on this maturing well. Points: 95/100

As always, it's about choosing the best parcels of fruit and barrels for this high-end wine. It's seamless. The pristine fruit absorbing the oak, the filigreed tannins, the chalky acidity, everything doing their bit to create a complete wine. While incredibly fresh, its best days are ahead of it.
