Tasting Notes

Aroma

The wine is intensely aromatic with a bouquet of wild red berries and black pepper along with cinnamon and plums.

Palate

The palate is rich, displaying fruits such as blackberry and cherry complementing the spicy backbone of liquorice and chocolate. A hint of savouriness gives the wine an extra layer of complexity with good tight acidity and smooth velvety tannins.

Cellaring Potential

This wine is enjoyable now, but with its rich texture and palate weight, it has the structure to develop beautifully over the next 5 to 10 years.

Winemakers Comments

With the ever-increasing globalisation of the wine industry, we, like you, could be forgiven for thinking we were all just pawns in the big wine company game. The release of the Pawn is a manifestation of our resolve to amend this situation by releasing wines hand crafted from small parcels of premium fruit from our Adelaide Hills Vineyards.

Purple-tinged, ruby-red in colour, this is very fragrant with aromas of berry pastille, liqueur cherry chocolates, spice, and a savoury hint of reduction. A round and succulent middleweight mouthful follows, ripe in sustained flavour and tangy with mouth-watering acidity. The tannins are soft and easy. Lovely balance. Very good. Points: 93/100

Offering gorgeous fruit purity and poise, the wine shows Black Doris plum, blueberry, subtle spice and floral aromas on the nose, followed by a fruit-forward palate delivering fleshy texture and polished tannins. Beautifully harmonious and lingering with a silky finish. At its best: now to 2029. Points: 93/100
