Tasting Notes

Aroma

Bursting with blackcurrant and blueberries, this wine shows the typical characters found in the Western side of the Barossa-chocolate/mocha and black pepper, but with a surprising freshness to the wine. Frankincense and blackberries jump out of the glass, along with a slight leafiness, which comes from the whole bunch component in the wine.

Palate

Soft and juicy on the palate, but with a backbone of tannin from the whole bunches that draws the wine across the palate giving it length and precision.

Vinification

Our Purple Hands crew hand pick the fruit into half- tonne picking bins, then foot stomp the fruit to burst the berries and encourage the natural fermentation to commence. 20% of this wine was fermented as whole bunch in this way, with the balance fermented on skins for 16 days in old concrete fermenters. Basket pressed to a 3,000L and 2,500L French oak foudre for for 12 months, before bottling with no fining.

Cellaring Potential

Ready to drink now or cellar for 5-10 years.

Estate-grown shiraz grown using organic and biodynamic practices in the vineyard. 20% whole bunches. Bright plum and dark berry fruits, exotic spice, roasting meats, citrus rind and assorted herbs. Medium bodied with meat-edged plummy fruit to the fore, cut with spice and light, gravelly tannin providing support. Spicy, chewy plum fruit abounds on the finish. Points: 91/100

Beefy red of inkiness, Bonox, rancio fruit n nut characters, dried fruits, fig, date, chocolate and glace cherries. It’s brooding and dense, dark fruited, bullies then stains the palate with its inky presence, though the finish is a little lemony and whips things away a bit quickly. Clumsy, but fun, fuller figured thing.
