Tasting Notes

Aroma

Aromas of citrus blossom and orchard fruits, hazelnut and a hint of struck match.

Appearance

Lovely bright mid yellow, green tints.

Palate

The palate is concentrated and rounded with serious texture and mouthfeel, the acidity runs in tandem with the fruit and the finish is precise and long.

Vinification

Handpicked on 21st and 22nd of March and carefully transferred overnight in climate-controlled storage to the winery at Yabby Lake Vineyard. Each parcel was handled separately in the winery. Whole bunch pressed. The juice was transferred to 500 litre French oak barrels for natural fermentation. A 20% portion of which were new. The wines were aged on lees in oak for a further 10 months, prior to estate bottling in late January 2025.

Cellaring Potential

Cellar for 5-10 years.

Vintage Notes

2024 was a cool and particularly dry, later season in the Coal River Valley. Small crops and lovely balance in the vineyard.

Winemakers Comments

Our philosophy at Yabby Lake is to craft single vineyard wines of great purity and character, reflective of our site and the season in which it was grown. In 2022, we embarked on an exciting new chapter for our family wine business – purchasing a special site deep in the heart of the Coal River Valley in Tasmania. We continue the same philosophy at our Tasmanian vineyard – a single vineyard chardonnay and pinot noir from the 2024 vintage.

Another nervy, mineral and refined release from Yabby Lake’s newest venture in Tasmania. Aromas of fresh lemons, grapefruit, flint, apple blossoms, white peaches and sourdough bread. The midweight palate has a linear, precise acidity wrapped in a generous yet tightly wound mouthfeel. Seriously good for lovers of new-fashioned chardonnay. Drink or hold. Screw cap. Points: 96/100

Tis release is taut, juicy and lengthy. It’s both mouthwatering and textural. It tastes of citrus, white peach, apple and custard powder, the latter note served both modest and integrated. The length of the finish of this wine is quite something. It feels ultra young but it’s on the road to excellence and beauty. 94+ Points: 94/100

Chardonnay from the Yabby Lake vineyard in the Coal River Valley; whole-bunch pressed, wild ferment in 500L French oak, 20% new. Pale straw with flint-struck aromas of citrus and stone fruits. Hints of nougat, white flowers, marzipan, crushed stone, sea spray, ozone and lightly spiced oak nuance. Some light curd and cream tones meld in on the palate, fine, vivid acidity providing ample drive with a gentle umami swell on the exit. Points: 94/100
