Tasting Notes

Aroma

The aromas are dark berry fruited, with a floral note and a spicy lift.

Appearance

Lovely deep crimson colour.

Palate

The palate is plush and rounded with fine grained tannins and serious depth of fruit. Long and fine on the finish.

Vinification

The fruit was handpicked between the 2nd and 3rd April, and carefully transferred overnight in climate-controlled storage to the winery at Yabby Lake Vineyard. Hand sorted and carefully de-stemmed, the whole berries were then transferred to oak fermentation vats for natural fermentation. A small portion (8%) of whole bunches were used in 2023. Once fermentation was complete, the wines were transferred to French oak 500L barrels for maturation, 25% of which were new. The wines were left undisturbed until estate bottling in late January 2024.

Cellaring Potential

Cellar 5 - 10 years.

Vintage Notes

2023 was a cool and particularly dry, later season in the Coal River Valley. Small crops and lovely balance in the vineyard.

Winemakers Comments

Our philosophy at Yabby Lake is to craft single vineyard wines of great purity and character, reflective of our site and the season in which it was grown. In 2022, we embarked on an exciting new chapter for our family wine business – purchasing a special site deep in the heart of the Coal River Valley in Tasmania. We continue the same philosophy at our Tasmanian vineyard, and we are excited to introduce our inaugural expressions of this site – a single vineyard chardonnay and pinot noir from the 2023 vintage.

In ’22, Yabby Lake bought a site in the Coal River Valley at Campania planted in '17 to 5ha of pinot noir and chardonnay. Ta da! This is the inaugural release and, for such young vines, a lovely drink. Lots of upfront dark fruit aromas and flavours, cherry cola, cocoa, blueberries, black cherries and plenty of savouriness throughout. It’s composed, detailed, with beautiful, quite ethereal, tannins and fine acidity easing off the mid-weighted palate. An impressive debut. Points: 95/100

The nose is perfumed and lifted with aromas of damson plums, wild blackberries, violets and cinnamon bark. The medium-bodied palate has finely integrated tannins and bright acidity, showing notes of dark cherries, dried herbs, orange rind and cedar. Very complex and tightly wound, this will unravel for many years to come. Exceptional. Premiere release from newly acquired vineyard. Drink or hold. Screw cap. Points: 97/100

This is very good. It’s not fruit-forward but it has depth, complexity and length, and that’s exactly what you want. It also has a structural firmness, its tannin in particular marching through the back half of the wine in duplicated steps, as if it means business. Undergrowth, smoked herbs, macerated cherries and mint characters are strung together in a gently reductive bow. This wine unfolds appreciably – or at least its flavours do – as it rests in the glass. You’d expect it to mature well. 94+ Points: 94/100

Deep and bright -red-purple colour, the bouquet plummy, dark-cherry—rich and ripe—with Campari/balsamic herb overtones. The wine is full in the mouth and rich, concentration and depth of flavour are impressive, the tannins abundant and fleshy, coating the mouth and complementing the intense, profound fruit flavour. Outstanding pinot noir. Long, long carry. Points: 95/100
