Tasting Notes

Vinification

Hand-picked on the 9th of March and mechanically berry sorted. 100% destemmed, crushed and tipped into 1800 L cocciopesto stone egg shaped amphoras. The fermentation occurred in the amphoras, with a gentle maceration of only wetting the cap, and remained on skins for 90 days. No pressings are used in this wine. Matured exclusively in the amphora for a further 8 months.

Vintage Notes

The 2019 growing season was very dry, which resulted in incredibly low yields. We had a relatively warm lead up to the ripening period, which produced a very condensed and fast harvest. These late ripening varieties faired very well in a season like this, giving rise to concentration, freshness of flavour and marked natural acidity.

Winemakers Comments

This is our first release of this wine, and it is the only wine we make that is not sourced form the Yangarra Estate. However, we felt with Grenache being our speciality, that this small plot (0.9 ha) of Grenache planted in 1962 was incredibly well-suited to our portfolio of single block wines.

Attractively fresh red fruit, blueberries, spiced bread and blue florals make for a fresh impression with plenty of fragrance. The palate is so smoothly polished and has long, fine tannins buried beneath supple, red-berry fruit flesh. Drink over the next six years. Points: 95/100

Naturally fermented in 1800L stone amphora with little agitation aside from wetting the cap. 90 days on skins. An additional 8 months in amphora. This cuvée is akin to the finest pinot; svelte, detailed and uplifting. Aromas of sour cherry, raspberry, rosewater, mace and orange zest. The superior wine of 2019 here, or at least what I’ve tasted to date. Stunning. The tannins, growing with air and the next sip. The finish, jitterbug energetic, chiselled and chamois of texture. Long and succulent. Another addition to the Australian stable of finessed world-class grenache. Ned Goodwin MW Points: 96/100

Some fascinating winemaking went into this, the wine was fermented in a 1800L stone amphora on skins for 90 days before further ageing of 8 months. It is the definition of a wine that speaks of place and purity of fruit. A fragrant nose with strawberry and red cherry met with earth, five spice, clove and stewed berry compote. The palate is elegant with with long lines of red cherry fruit before wood spice adds dimension and texture, there are fine sinews of tannin with bright red fruits that are drying and almost savoury to finish. The length is excellent, balancing generosity of fruit and savoury impact. Points: 93/100

It is hard to ignore the beauty this delivers. Another excellent Grenache in the Yangarra Estate portfolio. Grenache is more often than not about fruit elegance and fruit purity but I can't help but think this wine is all about those tannins. The first release of this wine under the Yangarra label, it is abuzz with red fruits early - all soft and delicate. Raspberries, cranberries and red cherries hit the dance floor and bust a move. Fermentation occurred in 1800L ceramic amphora and remained on skins for 90 days and seeing out another eight months. The wine sees no pressings nor any oak. Powdery feels to close, there's a sophistication about its swagger but the tannins have me hooked. Delicate, long and fine - incredibly impressive! Measured and balanced, excellence all the way. Drink to five years+ Points: 95/100

Spice, fresh raspberry, sage and dried mint and flowers. Crisp with a fresh crunch of pomegranate, slightly peppery, cool and perfumed, stony almost concrete dust tannin, flesh and succulence, with high cheekbones and fine tailoring. Love the cranberry dryness and fine grip of dusty tannin on a long raspberry sorbet finish. Beautiful expression of Grenache. 95 points. Points: 95/100

Pale garnet colour. Sappy, sultry, slate-like tannin hewn red of just shy of medium weight. Very fragrant, rose water, maraschino cherry, pot pourri. Beautiful perfume. Flavours are in the cherry-cranberry zone, those tannins though… and general sense of vitality and freshness. Excellent wine here. Structure, complexity, excellence. Points: 94/100
