Tasting Notes

Vinification

Sourced exclusively from our special Block 31 (1.7 Ha). At 210m elevation, this is the highest section of the 1946 planted bush vine Grenache, which also has the deepest sandy soil. Extremely low yields. Hand-picked on the 23rd of March, being a flower day on the biodynamic astrological calendar. Mechanically sorted. Destemmed, 50% whole berries and remaining crushed. Cold soak. Open fermenters with a long gentle maceration for a minimum of 21 days. Wild yeast ferment. No pressings are used in this wine. Matured on lees in older large Format French oak and sandstone egg for 11 months. Bottled February 2021. Certified Organic/Biodynamic.

Vintage Notes

The growing season was affected by a very hot spring, leading to the lowest yields on record. As the grapes started their ripening process the weather miraculously cooled to a very mild ripening season. This resulted in wonderful concentration of flavour, retention of natural acidity and brightness of fruit, but above all, beautiful finesse, and balanced tannins.

Winemakers Comments

High Sands Grenache is the pinnacle of our estate. Reaching deep within the sandy soil, our prized 1946 old vines produce wines that balance intense power and complexity with fragrance and beauty.

Region Notes

Yangarra is a single-vineyard estate situated in Blewitt Springs, at the northern edge of the McLaren Vale region, South Australia. Yangarra’s combination of ancient geology, high altitude and Mediterranean climate provide the ideal growing conditions for the best grape varieties of the southern Rhône.
