Tasting Notes

Aroma

Pure fruited aromas of blood plum and redcurrant combine with alpine herbs, wild mint, anise, clove, crushed seashell, and biscuit dough.

Appearance

Beautifully intense purple colour

Palate

Freshness abounds on the palate with fine but grippy tannin and good acid. A light to medium bodied wine, the flavour has a laser-like precision that gives good length, intensity and purity.

Vinification

Both blocks were picked on 7 March and co-fermented to allow maximum integration between the parcels. Near the end of fermentation 600L of wine was transferred to a single demi-muid barrel. The balance of the ferment was sealed in a variable capacity tank and spent 66 days on skins before transferring free run wine to a single 500L puncheon and the pressings to another puncheon. All oak used was older French in origin. The wine remained in oak on full lees where it matured until bottling in late November 2020. Unfined and unfiltered.

Part of a creative project out of the Langhorne Creek region: 3 winemakers were offered access to the region’s fruit for the first time. Potts clone Malbec, one plot on its own roots, the other grafted on to merlot. Pulpy and expressive, defined as much by the violet lift and teeming blue-fruit references, as by the framework of edgy tannins doused with garden herb and bush tomato accents. Long, mouth-filling and nicely pliant. Tony Love Points: 95/100

Attractive aromas of violets and plums, as well as blueberry and distinctive mint-leaf tones. The palate has a bright, red-toned core with tangy raspberry and redcurrant flavors. Very fruit-focused and crunchy. Drink now. Points: 90/100

Part of a creative project out of Langhorne Creek, for which 3 winemakers were offered access to the region’s fruit for the first time. From the Wenzel vineyard, 2 separate blocks co-fermented, then steered via a range of vinification techniques and maturation vessels. The deep purple colour is astounding, aromas of masses of violets, flint, and dark plum cake with baking spices. The palate then turns to pure dark plum and garden herb freshness. High intensity flavours, yet with an ease of flow and fine tannin grip. An exciting malbec expression. Points: 95/100

Deepish, bright red/purple hue, with a sweetly-berried, red cherry to raspberry aroma, very much a fruit style red wine. It’s light-bodied and soft-tannined, with fairly plain but attractive flavours, fine texture and it's very easy on the palate.

Scents of tomato leaf, salt bush, ripe plums, liquorice. Leafy and savoury red, green-gauge characters rippling through, saltiness to finish but a good, dry, acid-laden plum and tomato-y flavour profile. Does the variety justice. Fine tannins a feature too. Gluggabilty and interest. Points: 93/100
