Tasting Notes

Aroma

The nose is richly perfumed, with vibrant purple florals and dark fruits intertwined with aniseed.

Maturation

Matured for 16 months in French and Austrian oak, 22% new, before being fined, filtered, and bottled in November 2025.

Appearance

Deep purple with a garnet hue.

Palate

The palate carries a plush, concentrated core that is generous yet never heavy, showing superb balance. Layers of blackberry, cracked pepper and violet flow into a mineral finish, laced with black olive. Powerful yet detailed, this Syrah clearly reflect the character of the Gimblett Gravels, offering both intensity and precision.

Vinification

11 parcels were hand-picked and hand-sorted, and the majority was destemmed before fermentation in a combination of oak cuves, stainless steel tanks, and concrete vats. The skins were gently plunged, over an average of 20 days, and malolactic fermentation occurred simultaneously.

Vintage Notes

A cool, late winter delayed budbreak, followed by a mild spring that tempered yields, led into a warm, dry summer allowing for extended hangtime.

Winemakers Comments

From the stony soils of the famed Gimblett Gravels, this Syrah captures the unmistakable synergy between site and variety. Defined by a legacy of meticulous farming, clonal precision, and low-vigour, high-density vines, this wine reflects decades of refinement in one of New Zealand’s most distinctive terroirs. Deeply expressive, it champions lifted aromatics of florals, black pepper, and dark fruit with a palate supported by vibrant energy, refined structure, concentration and poise, with fine tannins and an elegant finish.

Gimblett Gravels Syrah, Shiraz this side of the ditch, continues to excite and seems to get better vintage after vintage. From a single vineyard, the colour here is a gleaming mauve/magenta. It is immediately apparent that the intensity of this well-balanced wine not only runs the full journey, but never wavers. The aromas include notes of leather, truffles, mulberries, black cherries, charcuterie, coffee grinds and an array of spices, with even a flick of pepper. The wine is taut, poised and offers a supple texture with fine balance. There really is such impressive length to this wine. For enjoying over the next fifteen years. Points: 95/100

This release is powerful and well structured, not to mention complex. But it’s also surly; it’s a bit of a grump. It tastes of plums, graphite, creamy oak, peppercorns and violets, and while there are some black pepper characters in play they are modest at most. These characters too are slightly bitter, for the record. Tannin is firm and yet the finish is still (very) well sustained. There’s a feeling though that this wine is all arms and legs at present; it hasn’t yet fledged into its proper swing. It will do so in time. 92+ Points: 92/100
