Tasting Notes

Aroma

Theres a minerality here, but a certain seductiveness to its perfume too, like freshly sprinkled bath salts with dried rose petals, lavender, peppermint and candied musk.

Appearance

Pale straw.

Palate

The palate is like a martini - albeit a sultry one - wet rock, olive brine with citrusy drive, maybe a touch of tart? Its not all linear; theres breadth with a hazelnut like mealiness. Its loooonnnnng.

Vinification

The Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer, along with a melange of smaller parcels, were picked and vinified separately. All were whole bunch pressed to old barrels for indigenous fermentation. Sulphured post sugar fermentation, then left on lees for eight months to build texture. The parcels were blended just before bottling, unfined and unfiltered.

Vintage Notes

A challenging vintage to pair with a challenging year in general. Spring 2019 was cool, windy and wet resulting in low crops due to poor fruit set. Temperatures remained moderate, and rain throughout the harvest period provided challenging conditions. Overall, the cool and wet weather resulted in low sugars (and thus alcohols) and crisp, refreshing acidity.

Region Notes

Single vineyard. The musk clone Chardonnay is officially listed as Mendoza clone, but it has a distinct musk aroma that leads me to believe it is a mutant clone of Chardonnay. This mutant, resides on the south-facing Birdwood slope. The Gewurztraminer comes from three separate blocks 425, Number 1 and Hilltop. All four of these blocks in the blend display the classic terroir of Nillumbik Bad Earth.

Chardonnay meets Gewürztraminer in this Aromatic Dry White, two friends that don't often find themselves in each other's company alone. Gewürztraminer breaks the ice with cheerful remarks of lychee, white rose petals and jelly bean and Chardonnay adds significant conversational content of influential acidity and critical weight. The two compliment each other by their differences and result in exactly what they set out to do, a perfumed, bone dry, white wine of character. They should do this again sometime, maybe with a meal of linguine pasta alle vongole, Netflix and chill perhaps. Points: 92/100

It’s that musk clone chardonnay with gewurztraminer blended in. Yarra Valley hometown for both. Something different. Love how the wine name tells you what’s up. Fragrant white with jasmine and frangipani floral scents woven through tangerine, lychee and green apple. Flavours are in that zone too, a little floral, some slickness to texture in lychee and apple juice meshed, but the finish honours the promise of the wine name, tingly, tart and eventually talc-like powdery dry. It’s an interesting, frisky, fresh white built around kinda simple fruit character, but delivers a great, easy drinking experience.
