Tasting Notes

Palate

The 2018 Blue Monday is defined by the raspberry and satsuma succulence of the Grenache; the Mourvedre adds a meaty, earthy/mineral backbone and the Shiraz is high noted with raspberry and spice. Youthful and vineyard driven the 2018 has a tighly woven structure that unwinds and evolves in the glass over several hours.

Vinification

After hand picking each variety was wild fermented separately using 2T open top fermenters. No acid adjustments or tannins were added, but whole bunches were included in the Grenache (25%), Shiraz (100%) and the Mourvedre (15%). Each parcel was matured separately in 500L puncheons. Bottled in January 2019.

Vintage Notes

The 2018 season was one of the best growing seasons for the past 20 years. An ideal spring was followed by a mild yet sunny summer which ripened all the reds deep into April without disease pressure. Crops were below average which led helped ripening and concentration of fruit flavor.

Region Notes

The Blue Monday Grenache blend is all about the vineyard. The Frankland vineyard grows untrellised bush vines on top of a lateritic ridge top with isolation as far as the eye can see. This is the first wine we have sourced from Frankland, the best red grape growing region in Australia. The combination of low vigour soils, low summer rainfall, inspired vineyard aspect and management makes this a very exciting prospect.

Very nicely done. Not a big wine by any stretch but everything feels well placed. Woody spice and redcurrant, cocoa and earth, florals and herbs. There's an intricacy to the tannin and a satisfying feel to the finish, even in a light to mid-weight context. Points: 93/100
