Tasting Notes

Aroma

The 2018 Cannonball has plush blackberry, cassis, dried sage, olive and grilled tomato fruit aromatics with complexing white flower and dark chocolate as the wine opens up.

Palate

The palate has silky and rich black fruits with the underlying savoury complexity of the 3 varieties. The layered tannin structure offers depth finesse and length with chocolate and emery texture. Finishes long with olive, blackberry and dried herbs lingering.

Vinification

Handpicked and de-stemmed to small open-top fermenters, we let the ferments go wild. Hand-plunging 2-3 times/day early we ease back during the latter ferment and pressed off skins 5 weeks after ferment starts. Maturation was in a mix of old and new (37%) French oak puncheons and barriques for 15 months.

Vintage Notes

The 2018 vintage was near perfect for ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other red varieties. A cool winter and wet spring led to an early start to picking. A cool dry summer punctuated with an occasional rain event kept the vines happy, balanced and ripening. April was typically warm and dry allowing these later varieties to finish effortlessly, with rich fruit textures and layered fine grained tannins the vintage signatures.

Region Notes

The site that provides our Cannonball Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot has a well drained northern aspect, beautiful lateritic gravel soils with underlying granite and cooling sea breezes during the afternoon through the ripening period. There are 2 clones of Cabernet Sauvignon which ripen slightly differently, with the Merlot on the boniest of the soil. A great recipe for ripening tannins and fruit intensity. The Petit Verdot is from one the older sites in the Margaret River providing a low yield of intense inky coloured berries.

Lifted aromatics of dark cherry, mulberry, tobacco, mint and dark chocolate. A really fresh and vibrant palate, crunchy red cherry, blackberry, brambly, cedary oak and spice. The tannins are firm, savoury and grippy and bring a delightful rigidity to the wine. Will blossom in time. Points: 93/100

61% cabernet sauvignon (providing the grunt), 30% merlot (seduction), 9% petit verdot (the cannonball). It all comes together well, and there's no argument about the grunt provided by the cabernet, or the overall length. The flavour descriptors, incidentally, are those of Snake and Herring. Instantly a calm elegance to this; aromas of briars and violets, cranberries and cedar, high-toned and fine. Low on width but full of length and drive - red cherry and raspberry acidity, just enough flesh to add charm to its fine tannins. A huge fan. Will live a very long time. Points: 95/100

Beautiful wine. Long and elegant but with plenty of substance. Creamy, red-curranty, slipped with bay leaf and flicked with herbs. But it’s the fruit, the svelte fruit, that captures. And then it’s the tannin, firm and fine-grained, that locks you in. Not to mention the perfume. In short it’s a lovely medium-weight wine Points: 94/100

The beautiful soft and delicious fruit of Frankland River has provided the basis for this excellent rhone-influenced blend. There's a mix of spices and herbs floating over the plush raspberry and plummy fruit. Seamless integration of tannins and a dab of oak to complement. Great mouthfeel. You can feel the energy here. Points: 93/100
