Tasting Notes

Palate

The 2022 version shows the vintage: bright citrus fruit with floral and mineral elements supported by long natural acidity. Showing intense grapefruit and preserved lemon notes with hints of honeysuckle and talc. Barrel fermentation has added a fleshy pithy texture and the finish is lemony and succulent with long natural acidity.

Vinification

Both components are separated into free run and pressings fractions. The free run components are settled and fermented in tank. The pressings are run direct to barrel and natural fermentation takes place. The free run component is all about lean tight fruit and length; the barrel ferment components add texture and richness.

Vintage Notes

The 2022 Sabotage is our fifth release and the vintage was complicatedĶthe season started with a cold wet winter that led to a cool spring and a later budburst. Stable weather set below average crop levels and ripening continued later than average. A hot spell at the end of January brought vintage back into regular timing and picking was in March.

Winemakers Comments

The Great Southern is renowned for its finely structured, elegant and long-lived Rieslings. Each of the 5 sub-regions is different in the way Riesling is expressed; part of the wonder of exploring Riesling from the Great Southern. We have utilized Riesling from 2 vineyards for this wine; one in the central Mt Barker subregion and the other in the larger Frankland subregion.

It has a lovely silky texture and seems off-dry, even if there’s good acidity in the mix. It’s refreshing thanks to all the citrus flavours, especially limes and mandarin, all topped with baking spices and lemon salts. Refreshing and a delicious drink. Points: 92/100

It's no wonder Great Southern riesling is growing in popularity when you put your nose in a glass like this. Wildy aromatic, spice and florals entice the senses. More powerful and generous than is typical for young Great Southern, jasmine, kaffir lime, peony florals lead you to a concentrated, citrussy and sleek palate. Flavours last long. Points: 94/100
