Tasting Notes

Aroma

The nose is expressive showing aniseed notes, hints of wisteria, gravel with slight mocha characters and a hint of balsamic.

Maturation

Approximately 18 months in mature french oak barriques.

Appearance

Mid depth and claret red in colour with hints of crimson around the edges.

Palate

Fresh cherries & cranberry, dried herb, rose, anise & earthy clay appear with a touch of kirsch all supported by fi ne, structured tannins & fresh acidity. With time, expect to see more bottle age characters develop - fl oral notes accompanied by more tar-like characters with hints of leather and cranberry.

Vinification

The fruit for this vintage was sourced mainly from one vineyard on the southern end of the Heathcote GI near Tooborac. The fruit was select harvested and crushed to small open fermenters and hand plunged daily. After approximately 10days of fermentation during which time the temperature and acid levels were monitored and adjusted as necessary it was pressed to tank using a gentle air bag press. The wine was racked off gross lees to barrel to fi nish malolactic fermentation and mature in older used barriques.

Food Matching

Bistecca Fiorentina with creamy Parmesan polenta & wood roasted mushrooms.

Winemakers Comments

Nebbiolo is a thin-skinned variety and known for its unusually light colour and higher level of tannins. The Heathcote vineyard is characterised by harder granitic gravels with larger granite boulders. The cooler end of the GI the vineyard has a long cool ripening season and vintage 2022 was slightly cooler across the region in general.

Let's talk nebbiolo. How long have you got? Hopefully, a fair amount of time because that's how long this lovely will need to fully express itself. It's coiled tight, but there is so much to excite from the inviting, lifted floral and spice-fuelled aromas to the slowly evolving mix of dark fruits, earth, undergrowth, woodsy oak, anise, spice and much more across a palate that is tightly focused in tannin. Something for now, something for the future. Points: 95/100

The name nebbiolo comes from the nebbia or “fog” that often blankets the region’s vine-covered hillsides. Very evocative. And even though the grapes for this wine come from a vineyard in the cool, high and often foggy granite-soil country in southern Heathcote, and 2022 was a cool, late vintage, the first thing you notice when tasting this nebbiolo alongside the barolo is the sweetness and volume of fruit: there’s a ripeness to the cherries and plums that just speaks so eloquently of the Australian sun. It’s a younger wine, too, of course, and spent less time in barrel (18 months) before bottling, so there’s a boldness and snappiness to the distinctive drying nebbiolo tannins that hug the tongue as you sip. Made me crave some nice prosciutto: its soft white silky fat would be the perfect foil for the tannins.
