Tasting Notes

Aroma

Fascinating and deep on the nose. Notes of hay, cut grass, tobacca, white pepper and a hint of mint.

Maturation

The wine has been aged for 30 months in large oak casks and, only a small amount, in barriques. It was bottled without filtration.

Appearance

Deep ruby red colour with garnet nuances.

Palate

Robust, muscular on the palate, with a taut and mineral finish. The tannins are typical of Serralunga: angular, austere and very deep. Appealing long lingering sweetness on the finish.

Vinification

Hand-picked on September 29th, 2018, the grapes have been destemmed and gently crushed before bringing them into stainless steel tanks for the alcoholic fermentation. They have spent about four weeks in contact with their skins. This time includes the pre- and post-fermentation maceration, using the traditional submerged cap method. Malolactic fermentation takes place in wood.

Region Notes

The grapes for this wine are sourced from the single vineyard Lazzarito in Serralunga dAlba. Lazzarito is a wonderful natural amphitheater facing southwest, at an altitude of 260 390 meters a.s.l., with a clayey and calcare ous soil. Viettis property in this vineyard stretches for about 2 hectares. The grapevines have an average age of 40 years. They are planted using the Guyot trellis system with about 4,500 plants per hectare.

Round and full of plum, cherry, pomegranate, green tea and eucalyptus flavors, this red is also dense and muscular. Gripping tannins reign on the finish. Overall, this is balanced and very long. Best from 2026 through 2043. Points: 94/100

Complex, some earthy notes as well as dried meats, rusty sanguine notes, plenty of spice (paprika, cumin and star anise), orange peel, dry stones and dried mountain herbs. Dried red fruits like cherry and strawberry are enclosed in savoury characters. The palate holds a characteristically bold frame of ripe tannin and there’s a build of ripe dark cherry fruit that builds out the finish convincingly. Poached berry fruit, too. Try from 2025. Points: 94/100

Quite a flamboyant feel to this on the nose, showing raspberries and grainy notes, together with hints of fresh mushrooms. Some brighter passion fruit comes through with air. Medium-bodied with an intense core of vibrant fruit and youthful tannin which together, given time, will add length and breadth to the wine. Wait for this one. Try from 2024. Points: 93/100
