Tasting Notes

Palate

Our Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre blend is inspired by the traditional estate blends of the southern Rhône. The Grenache is sourced from a combination of young and old bush vines. We select the most elegant and perfumed Shiraz and add Mourvèdre for fragrance and solid tannin structure.

Vinification

Each variety handled separately. Destemmed and selectively sorted in the winery. 50% whole berries retained. Wild yeast ferment. Each variety has a unique maceration. However, the unifying principle is using a very gentle pump over regime, often just wetting the cap, for a minimum of 14 days. Extended maceration for some portions of Grenache. The wine was matured in a mixture of old French oak puncheons and foudre, ceramic eggs and amphora for 8 months. Bottled February 2025.

Vintage Notes

A normal wet winter was followed by a picturesque dry spring. The long range weather patterns indicated a shift from La Niña towards El Niño, which favours drier and hotter conditions. In these warmer seasons, we adjust our practices to encourage slightly higher yields and more canopy cover. However, the unexpected summer rainfall in December and January presented a unique challenge, resulting in larger bunches and berry development. Warm conditions prevailed through February and early March, promoting ripening of flavours and sugars with the balance we were aiming for. The warmth led to an intense couple of weeks, during which we harvested the majority of the grapes.

The cépage is 67% Grenache, 17% Shiraz and 16% Mourvèdre, with each variety handled separately and with its own unique maceration. However, the common thread is a very gentle pump-over regime – often just wetting the cap – for a minimum of 14 days. This delicate approach plays out nicely in the finished wine. A very elegant nose to start. Dark cherry, pepper spice, raspberry and plum sit restrained in the glass as some emergent notes of game meat, crushed violet and dried herbs take shape in the background. Some time in the glass really allows the savoury elements to shine around the fruit. The palate is cool and restrained with nice precision to the fruit notes, which mirror the nose – plum, dark cherry – and some delicate pepper, musk, violet and dried-herb notes beneath. The tannins are silty and fine, providing a delicate-but-ample frame on which good length carries. I like the finesse and digestibility here – it’s McLaren Vale GSM in a well-placed modern style, exhibiting all the hallmarks of the blend and place but in a more lithesome aesthetic. Good value on show here at $35 retail. Points: 93/100

A blend of 67/17/16% grenache/shiraz/mourvèdre; separate ferments, with extended maceration for some grenache parcels, raised in old puncheons, foudre, ceramic eggs and amphorae. More grenache this year, and a little more heft. That word is inapt, of course, as this is bright-fruited, lithe and energetic, yet there’s a darker red tone to the grenache component. Darkly ripe raspberry, red plums, tart blackberry, black cherry, subdued ferrous notes, white pepper, mace and allspice. Tannins are uber fine, the profile open and engaging, the minor blending components providing a savoury bolster to the finish. 93+ Points: 93/100

Dark red raspberries, musk and raspberry leaf make way for a buoyant and bright core of raspberry and blackcurrant. The acidity is lifted and enlivens the core while a wave of tannins brings structure to the intensity. Its freshness is its superpower.  Points: 91/100
