Tasting Notes

Maturation

Matured in ceramic after blending for a further 4 months. 48% of the final blend was skin contacted.

Palate

Inspired by the textural white wines of the Southern Rhône, Ovitelli Blanc brings these traditional varieties together in blended harmony. Gently fermented and aged with skin contact in large ceramic eggs.

Vinification

All varieties hand-picked and sorted separately. Roussanne on the 12th of March, Grenache Blanc on the 22nd of March, and Grenache Gris, and Clairette on the 4th of April. Destemmed and crushed to ceramic egg and macerated on skins for an extended period, averaging 4 months. Batches were basket pressed, and only the very lightest pressings are kept separate to be considered for the final blend. These are un-fined, unsettled and fermented exclusively in ceramic. No sulphur is added until the completion of fermentation or the extended skin contact portions are removed from skins.

Vintage Notes

A normal wet winter was followed by a picturesque dry spring. The long range weather patterns indicated a shift from La Niña towards El Niño, which favours drier and hotter conditions. In these warmer seasons, we adjust our practices to encourage slightly higher yields and more canopy cover. However, the unexpected summer rainfall in December and January presented a unique challenge, resulting in larger bunches and berry development. Warm conditions prevailed through February and early March, promoting ripening of flavours and sugars with the balance we were aiming for. The warmth led to an intense couple of weeks, during which we harvested the majority of the grapes.

Region Notes

Yangarra is a single-vineyard estate situated in Blewitt Springs, at the northern edge of the McLaren Vale region, South Australia. Yangarra’s combination of ancient geology, high altitude and Mediterranean climate provide the ideal growing conditions for the best grape varieties of the southern Rhône.

A different blend this year of 31/28/22/19% grenache gris/grenache blanc/clairette/roussanne. Some batches were direct pressed, others saw up to four months on skins, with all fermentation and maturation in ceramic eggs. This hits different to prior releases, recognisable but just a little dialled up. A little whiff of measured reduction gives an appealing slatey, matchstick note floating like smoke over the golden apple, citron, pineapple quince and Meyer lemon fruit. It’s sunny in a way, an orchard bursting with life, but the textural tension, the layers of phenolic detail and the subtly integrated baking spices take away any notion of this being in any way simple. Rather it is calmly, coolly complex. And it gets better with air – significantly enhanced. 96+ Points: 96/100
