Winemakers Comments

This very traditional Australian Dry Red style has been part of my heart for many years and literally reminds me of home when I get it in the glass! Bizarrely it was a chance conversation about Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon with Phil Lehmann which led me down a path of blending enlightenment. How do we make wine quality even better through the art of blending the two hero varieties of the Barossa? Well, believe it or not, there is a trick and roughly you need to find the point at which they dont fight each other! Lots of fine tuningĶ ;) Certainly, this is the best value, most traditional and emotional Barossan style within the portfolio. Thank goodness we never gave up on Cabernet!

Alex Head's ode to the 'dry red', here a blend of 40% shiraz, 37% cabernet sauvignon, 15% mataro and 8% grenache from the Eden Valley, Bethany and Krondorf, two years on fine lees in 10% new French oak. There's always a purity and sense of composition to Alex's wines. Ripe plum and black fruits, abundant spice, meaty tones with a scattering of earth and herbs. Nothing poking out, and a dark, soulful wine of value and flavour. Points: 91/100

Black fruit, some mint and spice, dark chocolate, almond. It’s nudging full-bodied, with rich dark and chocolaty flavours, some truffle and earthiness, quite a bit of chew to tannin, some dried herb and orange peel bitterness, and a hearty finish of good length. Plenty of flavour and substance, and very good value. Points: 91/100
