Tasting Notes

Aroma

Aromas of fresh herbs and pink grapefruit give an immediate impression of the zesty, mouth-watering palate to come, with hints of freshly baked bread and toasty brioche indicative of time in oak.

Palate

The palate has an intense mineral drive of wet rock and sea-spray. Considered use of quality oak adds further complexity to the structure and mouthfeel, and contributes a subtle apple pie character providing balance to this steely chardonnay. A concentrated mid-palate with tension, fruit-drive and power.

Vinification

Hand picked and whole bunch pressed to French oak (25% new) for indigenous ferment. Minimum sulphur was added in early Spring 2021. Although the wine was left unsulphured for a few months, it has not been through malo-lactic fermentation. Racked and filtered in March 2022 after 12 months on full lees in oak.

Vintage Notes

2021 was a goldilocks vintage where everything was just right , and the resulting wines can be consumed young or cellared for a while. A vintage of balance, energy, and flavour.

This comes off a single block that is now 30 years old. An impressive Chardonnay combining power, texture and finesse. Savoury minerally aromas with a little chalk dust. The palate has a brightness and vibrancy with depth and a slightly fleshy concentrated middle. Layered and intense with a sustained finish. Subtle hunt of cereal mealiness on the finish. Points: 96/100

The first time I’ve seen this wine, and likely a very small make. A barrel selection from a single acre of 30-year-old Chardonnay vines on the Rising Vineyard. The top dog wine for $45? Get some. A different vintage, but also a bigger wine. More oak richness, and now it’s spiced apples, a little nutty bottle age and more oomph than the standard Rising Chardonnay. There’s a certain golden honeyed peach vibe here, with this moreish, yet crisp, acidity. A little x-factor on the palate, with excellent concentration and hints of dried lemon and orange in a landscape of fine white peach delicacy. Well done. Maybe a little raw on the finish, but so so good. Points: 94/100

Two picks of the Birdwood block from the steep south facing site, these vines are 30 years old. Pressed to 25% new French oak for fermentation. Zero malolactic fermentation and 12 months on full lees in oak. Stonkingly fresh with white nectarine, yellow grapefruit and kumquat. Crushed sandstone, oatmeal and almond flour. Acidity dances across the palate with river stone minerality and a creamy coconut milk finish. Oak is mellow and supportive of the citrus and stone fruit core. This is beautifully integrated and once again, feels effortless and natural. One Acre fits into the Rising collection with ease. Drink now but has capabilities to age for a further 2-5 years. A fitting match for a creamy dahl and roti number. Points: 95/100
