Tasting Notes

Palate

The Grenache is sourced from a combination of young and old bush vines. We select the most elegant and perfumed Shiraz and add Mourvdre for fragrance and solid tannin structure.

Vinification

42% Grenache, 33% Shiraz, 25% Mourvdre. Each variety handled separately. Destemmed and selectively sorted in the winery. 50% whole berries retained. Wild yeast ferment. Each variety has a unique maceration, however a unifying principle of a very gentle pump over regime, often just wetting the cap, for a minimum of 14 days. Extended maceration for some portions of Grenache. The wine was matured in a mixture of old French oak puncheons and foudre, ceramic eggs and amphora for 11 months.

Vintage Notes

The 2022 growing season followed very similar conditions to 2021, though slightly cooler. There were favourable winter rains and a mild flowering and fruit set period. The cool ripening period took place between late January through to harvest in March. Yields were well balanced, and we were pleased with the fruit ripeness, intensity, freshness, and natural acidity.

Region Notes

Yangarra is a single-vineyard estate situated in Blewitt Springs, at the northern edge of the McLaren Vale region, South Australia. Yangarras combination of ancient geology, high altitude and Mediterranean climate provide the ideal growing conditions for the best grape varieties of the southern Rhne.

Very deep, bold and bright purple-red colour, with a spice-box bouqet that includes pepper, clove, dried herbs and lead pencil, the palate full-bodied and well rounded with abundant but not overbearing tannins that provide very good framework. A rich concentrated and densely packed red that will age superbly. Points: 94/100

A blend of 42/33/25% grenache/shiraz/mourvèdre. Gentle extraction across a variety of regimes, with some extended skin contact for parcels of grenache; matured for 11 months in a mix of older French puncheons, foudre, ceramic eggs and amphorae. This is the wine to drink while the Old Vine Grenache slumbers for a few years yet. There’s the tannin drive and savoury cast of grenache from the vintage still, but the shiraz contributes some prettier red fruits (usually the other way around, perhaps, but such seems the year). Cherry, sour plum, dried raspberry, scrubby herbs, struck iron, brown cardamom and mace. This, too, could rest for a bit before broaching, but it’s fine drinking either way. Points: 93/100

Ferrous, nicely reductive and very savory, boasting grilled meats, camphor, iodine and cloves. A very earthy GSM, far from the fruitier Aussie norm. Plenty to like. From biodynamically grown grapes. Points: 92/100
