Tasting Notes

Aroma

Honeydew with hints of apple, key lime pie and spice.

Appearance

Pale straw.

Palate

Juicy lime and white peach, with a textural mid palate through to a focussed finish. Big flavours are restrained by balanced acid and a touch of oak.

Vinification

Cropped at approximately 2 tonnes per acre handpicked fruit was sourced from cool, higher altitude, prime vineyard sites on the Mornington Peninsula. Whole bunch pressed to French oak hogsheads (12% new) for fermentation and maturation for 12 months on lees in oak before bottling.

Vintage Notes

2021 vintage marks our inaugural foray into this world renowned cool climate region and couldnt be happier with the result. The vintage, despite some challenges, produced pristine fruit with beautiful natural acidity and fruit ripeness resulting in a fresh, textural and balanced Chardonnay that shows off just what the region can produce.

A lovely example of Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay showing that combination of delicacy and power. Whole bunch pressed to French oak hogsheads of which 12% was new. And then it got 12 months on lees which allowed the flavour profile to build. Has a savoury, slightly lemon curd palate with a little almond meal complexity. Love the overall feel. Points: 94/100

Hand picked then whole-bunch pressed to French oak hogsheads (12% new) for fermentation and maturation. 12 months on lees in oak. Juicy and taut in frame with youth on its side. It's still got a lot of living to do, and is very much in early building mode. A wine that stacks the bouquet in apple blossom, white peach, mango skin and citrus notes. Coasts nicely into a mid-palate core of nougat, leesy almond, baked bread and quince. Acidity is keen, but expect a fully integrated delight to emerge with some bottle age. Points: 90/100

Aromas of green melon, nougat, white peach, white flowers and yoghurt. Creamy, peachy, nectarine, stone fruit, textured, layered and mouthfilling. Points: 92/100

Traditional French varieties like chardonnay and pinot noir have never been the go of Tar & Roses and so this, from the Mornington Peninsula, is a distinct diversion. There’s a new pinot noir from Mornington as well. Elegant, varietal, well-balanced chardonnay. There’s both enough sunshine here and enough restraint. Nectarine and white peach, nashi pear and chalky/cedary notes get the job done in no-fuss style. Points: 90/100
